Did you know that a book exists which plainly and Biblically addresses the issue of lust? I stumbled across this one by accident, but I soon realized that it was a divine appointment. Not Even a Hint by Joshua Harris is a well written book of less than 200 pages that provides a Scriptural basis for the battle against lust, a personalized plan for fighting it, and a powerful exegesis of God's holy standard for His children based on Ephesians 5:3. "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people."
Straightforward without being lewd or indecent, Harris writes in a way that swiftly and strongly condemns sin, but leaves room for the grace of Christ to bring healing and restoration. He very clearly states that without a right relationship with Christ and help from the Holy Spirit, all we can do is set up legalistic rules which will lead either to self-condemnation or to Pharisaical pride. He encourages accountability and honesty before God and man.
The only objection I had was the short section in which he encourages singles to go out actively looking for a spouse. I feel Elisabeth Elliot in Passion and Purity holds a more God-centered view on this matter. I got the feeling that Harris flew past the point so quickly that he left unnecessary ambiguity which could easily lead to a mistaken understanding of the solemnity of marriage. Don't rush out to find a marriage partner; wait on God's timing and provision.
Overall, I highly recommend this book as an important tool in spiritual growth. It is holy and uplifting. Much of the material would be handy in battling against other forms of lust (money, power, prestige, etc.) as well as temptations of all sorts.
